Depression & The New Psychopharmacological Interventions

In this workshop we will explore the neurobiology of depression, including maternal & post-partum depression, and look at how antidepressants work. Specifically:

--MAO (mono-amine oxidase) inhibitors,

--tri-cyclics such as Elavil &

--SSRIs , drugs like Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil

We’ll also look at the effects of adjunct treatment for major depressive disorder and “treatment resistant” depression with newer so-called second generation antipyschotics such as

--Abilify & Seroquel

We will consider drug treatment during pregnancy, and post-partum depression, examining recent reports of effects on prenatal and early childhood development.

No prior knowledge of psychopharmacology required.

Instructor Melissa C. Anderson, MFT, Ph. D. Neurobiology, is in private practice in Berkeley & San Francisco. She is adjunct faculty at California Institute of Integral Studies where she teaches psychopharmacology, and does research on schizophrenia and bipolar disorder at Kaiser in Oakland. Melissa earned her doctorate in Biomedical Science with a specialization in Neurobiology from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York, in 1988, and received a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from New College of California in 2001. Her research on the biochemical aspects of anxiety and trauma have been published in Brain Research Bulletin and the European Journal of Pharmacology.

This course meets the qualifications for 4 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs and LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. (CEU Provider Jeanne Courtney, PCE3107.)
